김상균은 인터넷을 비롯하여 영화, 드라마, 광고, 입간판, 회화 등 다양한 미디어에서 이미지들을 수집하고 재조합하여 새로운 이미지를 생산한 뒤, 이를 비현실적인 생생함으로 화폭에 옮긴다. 밝은 색채의 풍경은 아름답다기보다 초현실적이다.

 

그에게 대중매체 이미지는 비판의 대상이자 메시지를 전달하는 방법이다. 이는 소비사회에서 절대적으로 대중매체의 영향을 받으며 살아갈 수밖에 없는 대중들에게 다가가는 가장 강력한 방법이기 때문이다. 오로지 이익만을 추구하는 자본주의 사회에서 실재와 상관없는, 소비의 미덕만을 내세우는 미디어 이미지는 생각할 겨를 없이 끝없이 생산되고 소비된다. 본래 이미지가 가진 의미는 어디론가 사라지고, 조작된 이미지는 강렬하고 화려한 색채로 뒤덮여 마치 모든 것이 충족된 완벽한 풍경처럼 보인다. 그러나 실상은 가짜 풍경이다. 그가 명명했듯이 ‘불편한 스펙터클’이다.

 

자본주의 사회를 대변하는 <Winter comes>는 풍경사진과 회화사진 이미지들을 합성하여 그린 인공적이고 기형적인 풍경이다. 작품의 제목은 미국 드라마 ‘왕좌의 게임’ (허구의 세계인 웨스테로스 대륙의 7개의 국가와 하위 몇 개의 국가들로 구성된 연맹 국가인 칠 왕국의 통치권, 철 왕좌를 차지하기 위한 싸움을 그려낸 드라마) 속 중심 문장, 시련을 암시하는 “Winter is coming(겨울이 오고 있다)”에서 가져왔다. <후렴구-낭만적인 말의 반복 1, 2> 역시 크게 다르지 않다. 그는 이러한 방법으로 자연의 광활함, 숭고함, 아름다움을 얄팍하게 표현, 화려한 자본주의 사회에 대한 비판이자 비극적 결말을 암시하고자 한다.

Kim Sanggyun creates new images by collecting and recomposing images from various forms of the media such as film, drama, advertisement, billboard, and panting, etc. He then transposes this onto a canvas in an unreal sense of vividness. His images in bright colors go beyond being beautiful to being surreal.

 

To the artist, such mass media image is both a subject of criticism and a way of delivering the message, because it’s the most powerful way of approaching the mass which, in this consumerist society, is inevitably bound to live strictly under the influence of mass media. Media images propounding the virtue of consumption are endlessly produced and consumed. In this profit-crazy capitalistic society. The original meaning of the image has vanished, and the fabricated image is covered in powerful and brilliant colors, making it look perfect and complete. However, the image is fake, or as coined by the artist, it’s an ‘uncomfortable spectacle’.

 

Representing the capitalistic society, Winter Comes is an artificial and malformed landscape which integrates synthesized images from photographs of landscape and painting. The title of the work comes from the statement “Winter is coming”, which foreshadows hardship. This was a crucial statement from the American fantasy drama TV series Game of Thrones (Set on the fictional continents of Westeros, the story centers on the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms and follows a web of alliances and conflicts among noble families to claim the throne). The same methodology goes for the work Refrain- Repetition of a romantic saying 1, 2. Through such methodology, the artist attempts to superficially express the vastness, loftiness and beauty of nature through such methodology, while criticizing the spectacular capitalistic society and hinting at its tragic aftermath.
